CHAVES - JUST A BEAUTIFUL MEMORY

O despovoamento de cidades e terras mais pequenas em Portugal tem sido um problema cada vez maior e mais difícil de combater, essencialmente no norte do país e a cidade de Chaves é uma dessas áreas onde se começa a viver essa realidade.
A cidade de Chaves é um culminar de vários pontos turísticos como os grandes fortes de São Neutel e de São Francisco, a ponte romana e as termas. Todos estes pontos são responsáveis pela elevada quantidade de turistas que, comparado com o número de habitantes, é muito maior e mais notável. Para além disto, não só em Chaves, existe a tendência dos mais jovens se deslocarem para o litoral ou para zonas mais desenvolvidas na esperança de adquirirem melhores condições de vida, no geral, e por isso o número reduzido de habitantes acaba por se resumir a uma população de uma idade mais avançada.
Este é um projeto com o objetivo de retratar a cidade, dar a conhecer a sua história e essência, acrescentando o peso da questão do abandono populacional que é visível na cidade de Chaves.

The depopulation of small cities and towns in Portugal has been a growing problem and more difficult to combat especially in the north of the country and the city of Chaves is one of those areas where this reality begins to live.
The city of Chaves is a culmination of several tourist spots such as the great forts of São Neutel and São Francisco, the Roman bridge and the thermal baths. All these points are responsible for the high number of tourists, which, compared to the number of inhabitants, is much larger and more notable. In addition, not only in Chaves, there is a tendency for younger people to move to the coast or to more developed areas in the hope of acquiring better living conditions, in general, and that is why the small number of inhabitants ends up being reduced to a population of an older age.
This is a project with the objective of portraying the city, making its history and essence known, adding the weight of the question of population abandonment that is visible in the city of Chaves.

" Com o intuito de fazer um registo fotográfico da cidade de Chaves, decidi meter-me num autocarro e seguir numa viagem de duas horas até lá. Uma viagem que serviu para refletir sobre aquilo que seria a essência do meu trabalho. Uma viagem calma, rápida e que sem dar por nada já estava de regresso.
Este ensaio fotográfico tem como objetivo tratar o despovoamento que tem vindo a ser cada vez mais frequente tanto no Norte como no interior do nosso país. Felizmente, a cidade de Chaves não se pode considerar um caso agravado no que diz respeito ao abandono populacional, mas mesmo assim, não deixa de existir e por isso, através do registo de áreas cuja falta de intervenção humana é notável, pretendo explorar a ruína, o abandono e explorar alguns pormenores como a o elemento da natureza que está presente de forma abundante.
Outros elementos como as texturas, as cores, o tipo de arquitetura e até mesmo as suas zonas mais turísticas foram retratados já que fazem parte daquilo que caracteriza a cidade, são o que compõem este seu retrato, um espelho daquilo que é o seu coração.
Uma cidade que enche o meu próprio coração pela enorme quantidade de bonitas recordações que tenho desta que é a minha segunda casa."

" In order to make a photographic record of the city of Chaves, I decided to get on a bus and go on a two-hour journey there. A trip that served to reflect on what would be the essence of my work. A calm, fast trip and without realizing it was already back.
This photo essay aims to treat depopulation, which has become more and more frequent both in the North and in the interior of our country. Fortunately, the city of Chaves cannot be considered an aggravated case with regard to population abandonment, but even so, it does not cease to exist and therefore, by registering areas whose lack of human intervention is notable, I intend to explore the ruin , abandonment and explore some details such as the element of nature that is abundantly present.
Other elements such as textures, colors, the type of architecture and even its most tourist areas have been portrayed since they are part of what characterizes the city, are what make up your portrait, a mirror of what is your heart.
A city that fills my own heart with the huge amount of beautiful memories that I have of this, which is my second home. "
